A Napping Seal in Boothbay Harbor

A Napping Seal in Boothbay Harbor magnify

By Rachel Lamb

When we went to visit our new friends on Spoony, they brought out their kayak, which we paddled to a small cove.  Hannah and I had hoped to see seals lying on the rocks, but we were disappointed because it was still morning, and the seals weren’t sunning themselves yet.

The next day we motored over on our own dinghy back to the cove.  The sun was already very high in the sky, and as we turned off the motor, and quietly paddled into the cove we saw…….. a seal napping on the warm rocks!  We paddled closer, and closer to the sleeping seal.  Soon we were bumping against the rocks.  We quickly snapped some pictures and slowly the seal woke up and lifted his head to look at us with a bewildered look on his face.  While his eyes got used to the light, he slowly waddled backwards into the shallow, clear water.  We ran up the rocks and watched the seal as he swam out of the cove.
